The Feldenkrais Method uses gentle movement and sensory input to enable the baby to move freely in all directions. Stretching is not necessary as the child uses normal movements and assisted weight shifts to alter the resting positions and normalize muscle length. The reason that stretching is not used is based on the concept of neuronal organization. Research shows that the more a neural pathway is used the more efficient and entrenched it becomes. In other words every time you go towards the limit or difficulty the more the brain is told “yes this is the limit, yes here is the discomfort.” By working in the range of ease and comfort the brain finds new possibilities leading the child to comfort while playing and resting in new positions.
